HeadLine News Group of Free Vintage Crochet Patterns

Headline News is the name of this free vintage pattern.

The second free vintage pattern for this week is actually a small pamphlet of 4 different designs. All are crochet and around the 1940's in date.

The first one is called a Head Scarf, the second a Facinator and the third a Captivator. I don't know if the different names for basically the same article of clothing is just to separate the three or actual terminology of the time.

The last pattern in the set is a round shawl which is called (of course) a round shawl.

Looks to me like the trio could easily be converted into cowls, shawls and ponchos for a more modern look.

I hope you enjoy them.

I'm working on some vintage children's/baby patterns for next week!

Tuttie Frutti Lion Afghan Free Crochet Pattern

Tutti Frutti Lion Afghan is this week's free crochet pattern.

The afghan is basically a large oval with a pink Lion's mane added, then eyes, nose and mouth.

It is a bit like my Cuddle Dog afghan.

A fun shaped afghan great for kids or the young at heart.

The Lion Afghan gets its Tutti Frutti name from the name of the yarn I used for its body; Red Heart Baby Clouds soft and chunky yarn in Tutti Frutti. The pink is the same brand call Pink Lemonade.

The afghan is fairly quick to make due the the chunky yarn and large hook used.

It would make a great gift or addition to a child's room.

I hope you enjoy it!

Wyatt and Crochet Thread

This is Wyatt. He's wanting something as usual.

When he was a puppy he could take an unopened ball of crochet thread, open it and have it all off the cardboard insert in 5 minutes!

Now he just stares until I put down my hook and pay attention to him.

This time my free pattern is for the 12-inch fashion doll. I know in the photo the outfit is on a Bratz doll, but the outfit will fit most any 12-inch fashion doll so long as you don't try it one one of the original very busty Barbies.
It is a pants, top and Jacket set. The pants and jacket have a triangle of orange crochet into them for decoration. Crochet in size 10 crochet thread, it is a project that does go fairly quickly.

Free Vintage Ruffled Bag Crochet Pattern

I try to post 2 free vintage patterns from my collection a week and this week's second pattern is this Ruffled Bag. It's crochet and around late 30's or early 40's.

I realize there are people out there who sell vintage patterns and I've even bought a few (I never post one I've bought a copy of, only the patterns I have the actual printed page/booklet of that I personally have bought at thrift stores, antique stores, estate sales, etc.) and have always been disappointed with the lack of instructions originally published. Often I've had to set down and basically re-write the pattern in order to make it. Because of this, I feel they should be made free. Good luck in making them!

Free Crochet Tutorials

My latest tutorials are on the yo-yo. The yo-yo is really just a crochet round that you can stack to make arms and legs and such on animals or dolls or you can attach them together to make afghans, scarves, etc.

The first method is just a simple slip stitch as you go way of joining.

The second method is taking your yo yos and joining them into a block. This way is a bit more complicated, but still relies on slip stitches as well. this time you are taking the finished yo-yos and then connecting them separately by slip stitching 1st in one and then the other.

With all my tutorials I make a photo version found on my site and a video version that is also on my site and YouTube.

I personally prefer the photo tutorials, that way I can follow along at my own pace, first seeing it and then doing it and then going on to the next photo.

I've been working hard on reorganizing my tutorials so they are easier to follow and to find.

If there is anything you'd like to see in a tutorial let me know!

Enjoy!

Free Crochet Afghan Pattern: Flowers In The Snow

Flowers In The Snow afghan is my latest free pattern.

It was one of the first afghans I ever tried to design. I wanted this large flower surrounded by lace. I think I got the lace bit right, but maybe the flower could be bigger.

I used a soft and fuzzy yarn called Jiffy. Not so sure it's still out there, but any worsted weight yarn will work equally as well.

I hope you enjoy my Flowers In The Snow!

Free Vintage Crochet Pattern Blue Diamonds Afghan

The afghan is called Blue Diamonds. It is crochet into blocks and then sewn together.

This is my first free vintage pattern. It's from my own collection of patterns, leaflets, booklets, etc. I'm just a sucker for all that old stuff!

This pattern is now in the public domain which is why I'm posting it.

The vintage patterns I have are now on their own section on my free pattern site. I've copied the pages and turned them into a pdf for you to download and use.

Right now there are 4 on the site and I'm hoping to post a new one every week.

Hope you like some of the golden oldies as much as I do!

Here is a great photo tutorial on how to make a "fabric" with pop tabs and chain stitch in crochet. It's fairly easy to do.

I used this tecnique when I make the Pop Tab Envelope Purse. As you can see from the photo the purse needed to be linned but you can still see clearly the pop tab "fabric".

I also used it to make part of this Pop Tab Monkey.
It would be great to use in other totes and purse styles as well as maybe in a vest or scarf.

As soon as I get the video posted for the tutorial I'll let you know!

Free Pop Tab Crochet Patterns

There are three new free patterns at Donna's Crochet Designs and all three have pop tabs incorporated into them.

The first is a lovely layered Round Hot Pad. The pop tabs are added as you crochet. They are layered into this great circle pattern.

I think it may be may favorite of all I've done recently!

Next is yet another pot holder, but this one features pop tabs worked into a check pattern.

You see, you really can do just about anything with pop tabs and crochet!

The last pattern is for a place mat. Along each side are four rows of pop tabs!

I also have a great new tutorial on how to do all the stitched needed to make all three projects!

I hope you enjoy them!

Vintage Crochet Patterns

I've only recently discovered vintage crochet patterns.

I had never really looked at them before thinking they were all doilies and pillow cases, you know old lady/grandma stuff, but I was wrong!

There are a lot of great purse patterns out there that work very well for today.

Here is my first attempt. I got the pattern out of a really old book I had. I had always liked the texture or look of the stitches on the purse and intended on using it for inspiration. (I've got book cases and folders full of inspiration photos)

I used an all cotton yarn I got on clearance and never really found a use for. (Sound familiar?) It's a sugar 'n cream yarn in off white.

The crochet is done in continuous crochet where you don't stop and start each round but just keep going around and around..

It's basically you are making at large rectangle that you then fold in at the sides and then fold over at the corners.

You need to line the purse, but if using a magnetic fastener you would have to do that anyway.

I like how it came out and plan on doing more.

The only real disadvantage to vintage purse patterns that I have ran into is the lack of gauge and size of the finished item. But that can work to your advantage. Basically you just substitute any yarn you'd like to work with and then use a hook you're comfortable with and go! Yarn weight is really what your size is dependant on.

Happy Crocheting!
